Your Blackjack Do's and Don'ts

Blackjack strategies, as in most casino card games, can be classified into two categories: the tactics that you should always do, and those that you must always steer clear of.

Here are some of the things you need to do:

1. Always stand if you have a 16, and the casino dealer holds anything above a 6.

2. If you are not sure whether to hit or stand, and if the dealer's up card is not giving any help, always assume that the hole card is a ten. This will make it easier for you to determine, based on the up card, whether you should draw or stand.

3. If you are holding a soft 17, and the casino dealer shows you a 9 or higher, get another card; the odds of you busting are low.

4. Except for tens and face cards, always split your pairs.

Now here are the things you should avoid.

1. Do not take insurance. This option is offered in all Blackjack tables, live and online, because they know the odds are very much in their favor. Don't take it.

2. If you're considering joining a Blackjack tournament, don't go for a buy in: go through a satellite (unless the buy in is very cheap). The reason is that the experience you gain will be critical.

3. Don't complain about cheating; that is something indulged in by losers and those who do not know how to play the game.

4. Being arrogant or cocky is unacceptable in a casino, be it live or online. You may see this on TV, but that is only for show. Win or lose, be gracious.

Playing Blackjack is, in the end, all about winning money. Most concentrate on the things that they have to do right, which is all well and good. The other half, however, should not be forgotten. We refer of course, to the actions that should be avoided. The ones listed above are among the most common, but you will come across a few more as you play.

In order to keep winning, you should be observant. Watch out and read up on not just the things that work for other Blackjack players (and yourself), but also be on the lookout for those missteps that take place quite often. You may read about it, or it could happen in the casino. Whatever the case may be, make a note of it (mental or otherwise).

Doing so will serve you in good stead. It will help you understand the principles that guide winning Blackjack players, at the same becoming aware of the pitfalls that hamper the other players.
